Managing a depressed partner

Right at this moment you are probably feeling very unhappy with your relationship. This is totally normal because emotional and mental health issues and tense relationships go hand in hand. It is hard work isn’t it?! It is frustrating, emotionally draining and isolating. You are most likely feeling hurt, helpless, possibly insecure and angry.

Why is it such hard work?

When you live in an environment where depression is prevalent it draws enormous amounts of emotional energy from you. You are combating an environment within the home that is strongly negative, it is life sapping and colours all your conversations and relating.

At the same time you are trying to support a family and protect them from the tension and conflict within your relationship. That’s strong enough reason for you to be feeling unhappy!

Living under this dark cloud of depression:

When you have lived for so many years in this environment there is an unconscious cloud of tension and anxiety that is constantly with you and over time this wears down your resilience. You begin to see your family pulled apart as the effects of the depression seep into your social interactions and the lives of your children. It begins to impact negatively on your own career.

Know the signs pointing to the “danger zone”:

When you reach the point described above you have reached a “danger zone”. The danger zone of actually experiencing your own journey of depression as you are torn in all directions trying to love, support, understand and meet the needs of your partner and your family. By now you are starting to feel that the only answer is to leave the relationship. You are thinking that there is no one out there who could possibly understand what you are really going through.

The good news:

When you have reached this point it is critical that you reach out for help. Be assured that there is someone who totally understands what you are going through. There are many other options for you to choose from rather than deciding to leave the relationship. If you truly want to change the results in your life and your relationship then this is the time to seek out those resources that are going to give you the power to get your life and relationship moving in the right direction.
