How To Deal With Depression In Relationships

Hello, I’m Christine McRae, founder of The Trailblazing Woman. I established this coaching practice to provide specialised coaching for women supporting a partner with depression. I decided to specialise in this area of relationship coaching because I have experienced and understand the emotional pain a woman goes through in this situation.

You see, my husband and I have had this relationship challenge for most of our married life, and I can remember the morning I woke up and said to myself, I can’t do this anymore. I have to get out of the relationship, the frustration and stress had become too much for me, and I actually felt despair that I would ever find a way out of the situation.

He Became A Different Man

One of the biggest challenges for me and one that was emotionally painful for me to watch was how debilitating the depression was on my husband. He became a different man. He lost his confidence, he wasn’t able to sleep and became very irritable and then he had long periods of absence from work which really lowered his self esteem. As the depression continued, it began to limit us socially and I found that very isolating and lonely.

Another challenge was for me was the turning of myself inside-out and upside down, trying to accommodate his constant mood changes. At the lowest point in my relationship, I realised that for us to move forward, I needed to make some changes. I definitely needed to find some solutions and strategies, not just to cope but to manage myself and my partner effectively during his periods of depression.

I Realised I Needed Support

I didn’t know a coach at that time who could give me that support. However, I did find an amazing mentor who was my lifeline.  You will find as you begin to apply the strategies and tools that I did, that your confidence to manage your situation will be restored.

So imagine the sense of relief you would experience to know that you can talk to someone who totally understands what you’re going through, who can bring perspective and a clear sense of direction. What would it feel like for you to be released from all the emotional pain,  frustration and anger that you’re experiencing and carrying in your physical body right now?
